Weekly Wonder #7

This weeks wonder comes to you from Hilton Head Island. This morning my family and I went for a walk on the beach at low tide and the beach was so big! This evening we went for a walk again at high tide and
we were surprised to see how little the beach was! This made me wonder about the tide.
This weeks wonder-
What makes the tide go in and out?

It is so exciting when you are on vacation and your family continues to wonder. I am so excited to see the picture it helps me to visualize the ocean. I wonder if the tides have anything to do with the moon phases?

Dear first graders,

It is exciting to see you ask questions about the world!

As far as tides are concerned, these are formed due to several factors some of the most important being the gravitational pulls of the Moon and Sun, as well as the rotation of the Earth.
As you might know the Moon orbits the Earth and its gravity "pulls" the fluid part of it (the oceans) - if you wish, like a magnet. The Sun has a much stronger gravitational field but because it is so far from the Earth its impact is not as visible.
Twice a month, the Sun, the Moon and the Earth are aligned (around new moon and full moon) - so that the Sun reinforces the Moon's gravity, making the tide the highest.
There are many things to learn about tides but these are the basics - I hope you will keep questioning!
